What about other files? Did you try my suggestion to do a search for all changes on that date? Unfortunately for an install you won't be able to take advantage of ProcMon to supplement that type of analysis but doing it might uncover things such as the install now failing prematurely before those files even get written out of the WinPE RAM drive.
Alternatively, perhaps you could try looking there? X: see if there are any more recent changes in it? Supposedly we can press Shift-F10 to enter WinPE's Command line, though that avenue may be blocked and you would have to find a way of enabling it.
I think I saw a bcdedit setting which might help with that I was imagining that it could be a switch which would enable the Shift-F10 but apparently it is normally something much different. I was able to update a windows 7 machine to 8. The "C" drive is "boot" volume the one with Windows, I am asking about the "System" volume the one with the boot files on it.
